The Alumni and Development Office (ADO) and the Career Development Centre (CDC) co-organized an alumni talk titled “Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the University of Macau: UM Distinguished Alumni Talk ” recently at the Student Activity Centre Theater of UM. Alumnus Cheong Lok Tin was invited as the guest speaker to share his career experiences and entrepreneurial journey with teachers, students and alumni on the topic “I am the witness and beneficiary of a good Sino-Portuguese relationship”.
Prof. Martins, Vice Rector (Global Affairs) delivered a speech at the talk. He thanked the alumni for their contributions to the alma mater and society over the years, he also believed that this was a good opportunity for students to learn from the alumni’s sharing and motivate themselves to reach their full potentials.
Alumnus Cheong is the Chairman of San You Development Co. Ltd. and Crowne Plaza Macau. As a donor of the Cheong Kun Lun College (CKLC), he has been supporting the UM’s development over the years. He was conferred with the Medal of Industry and Commercial Merit for the year 2013 by the MSAR Government.
Alumnus Cheong appreciated the alma mater for giving him opportunities to share his experiences. He shared with students how he made use of Macau’s Sino-Portuguese platform to launch his first Sino-Portuguese business project after he finished his studies in Portugal in early 1990s, as well as how he attained success in his second Sino-Portuguese project in national-level with an investment of two hundred million dollars and started up his own business, based on the lessons he learned from the failure of his first project. In addition of serving as a perfect example of the saying “Success is built on failure”, alumnus Cheong’s success also realized the fruitful results of the cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.
Through sharing his motto “Learning from practice” with alumni and students, alumnus Cheong encouraged them to enhance their understanding of the society, equip themselves with extensive expertise and develop positive attitudes at work.
